This blog is based in the Department for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto. It is intended primarily for use by students enrolled in RLG245.Religions of the Silk Road and RLG356.Islam in China – two courses I’ll be teaching during the 2009-2010 academic year.
I’m Amanda Goodman, a relatively new hire at the UofT specializing in medieval Chinese Buddhist history. My research focuses on the extant manuscript finds at the Dunhuang Buddhist cave site in northwest China (modern Gansu province), and has led me down the long and winding path of Silk Road Studies. That’s how both these courses came about.
A couple of us (Travis, Nick, and I) are busy launching a new website <http://mappingthesilkroad.net/> to complement RLG245. Okay, it’s mostly Travis and Nick working on the website, but I’m busy here, trying to learn a bit about blogging. Incidentally, students in both RLG245 and RLG356 will be asked to create their own blogs to post responses to weekly readings, participate in group discussions, and create a final project – but we’ll talk about all that in class.
Over the next year I’ll be posting images, videos, and other useful links related to both courses here on my blog, so feel free to stop by anytime to check out what’s new. Comments and suggestions always welcome!
